Starry first graders have been very busy learning and working on building their reading fluency and accuracy. After reviewing letter sounds at the beginning of the year, students were introduced to vowel teams and vowel digraphs. These include ar, er, or, oi, aw, ou, magic e (long vowel sound), oo, and ee.
As these sounds are introduced during our whole group lessons, words with these phonics sounds are incorporated into their short stories from their "readers" and are distinguished in bold print. Doing this gives students practice and repeated reading focusing on these skills.
During this process, students are decoding words while reading and encoding the words while writing in our skills book practice pages. We are very excited to see their progress as readers building on their fluency and accuracy.
