MISD CV-19 Weekly Report

Positive COVID-19 Reported Cases

While protecting the privacy of students and staff, the Marion Independent School District is committed to maintaining transparent communication with our local community and families.  The district will provide the public with information regarding positive cases of COVID-19 for students and for staff.  Look to this webpage for weekly updates regarding the reports of positive cases for students and staff who were in attendance in the District.

According to the United States Department of Education FERPA and the Coronavirus Disease 2019 guidelines, school districts shall only release information “... that does not disclose other information that, alone or in combination, would allow a reasonable person in the school community to identify the students who are absent due to COVID-19 with reasonable certainty.”  In other words, breaking this data down by students and by staff (as opposed to by specific building or grade levels) is necessary so that individual students or staff cannot be identified. As per guidance from the Iowa Department of Public Health, any case counts of more than zero but less than 6 must not be reported by exact count so as not to disclose personally identifiable information, and therefore will be identified as less than or equal to 5 ( ≤ 5 ).  (See confidentiality provisions in IA Code Section 139A.3(2).)

Disclaimer: The information set forth above is for informational purposes only.  This information is based on reports to the District from other sources which have not been independently verified.

For each positive case reported, contract tracing is done. The person who tests positive is directed by public health to self-isolate and take other appropriate measures in accordance with public health guidelines.

Individuals that are identified as having close contact (close contact is defined as less than 6 feet for longer than 15 minutes in a 24 hour period) with an individual who tests positive for COVID-19 will be notified by call, text, or email.  The close contact will need to follow the appropriate guidelines from the date of last exposure (see guidelines).  Appropriate actions will be taken, in accordance with District protocol, to thoroughly clean, sanitize, and disinfect any impacted areas. Classes will continue unless announced otherwise.

At times, the number of individuals impacted by COVID-19 may necessitate the District to close a classroom, building section, or entire building. If a closure is announced and a subset of students are moved to emergency response Virtual Learning, the further communication will be shared.
